Driven by the goal of improving reading skills among young learners, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) gathered 100 tutors and 50 Youth Development Workers (YDW) for a five-day TaraBasa training and Pre-deployment Orientation at South East Asian Institute of Technology, Inc. (SEAIT), equipping them to become catalysts of change in their respective communities.

The capability-building program marks the first-ever implementation of the TaraBasa Tutoring Program in the area, bringing together a total of 150 participants for intensive preparation in literacy instruction and community engagement. The initiative aims to address reading gaps among elementary learners while empowering youth to take active roles in nation-building.

Throughout the five-day training, participants underwent a series of lectures, workshops, and collaborative activities focused on effective teaching strategies, child development, and reading intervention techniques. Tutors were trained to deliver structured reading sessions, while Youth Development Workers were equipped with skills in monitoring learners’ progress and supporting program implementation at the community level.

Program facilitators emphasized not only the importance of instructional competence but also the value of dedication, patience, and compassion in working with young learners. Values formation and professionalism were integrated into the sessions to ensure that participants are holistically prepared for their roles.

Following the training, a pre-deployment orientation was conducted for the student tutors and Youth Development Workers to further prepare them for their assigned communities. The session focused on program guidelines, roles and responsibilities, and field expectations to ensure the smooth implementation of the TaraBasa Tutoring Program.

SEAIT, as the host institution, provided a conducive environment for learning and collaboration. The partnership between SEAIT and DSWD highlights a shared commitment to promoting education and community development through meaningful youth engagement.

As the training concluded, participants expressed their readiness and enthusiasm to apply what they had learned in their respective communities. Many shared their motivation to help young learners improve their reading skills and contribute positively to society.
